A retinoid at night

The one skincare ingredient with decades of trials behind it rather than marketing.

What to do

Start with over-the-counter retinol or retinaldehyde — a pea-sized amount for the whole face, two nights a week, building to nightly over a couple of months. Prescription tretinoin is stronger and needs a provider. Night only, and sunscreen the next morning is not optional.

Right after you wash your face at night.

On a hard day: Moisturizer only tonight. Pick the retinoid back up tomorrow.

When you might notice

Twelve weeks for texture, six months for lines. It usually looks worse for the first month — that is the adjustment, not a reaction.

Roughly what it costs
