On your skin

Topical minoxidil

The only over-the-counter treatment approved for hair thinning in women.

What to do

5% foam once a day, or 2% solution twice a day, onto the scalp itself rather than the hair, on dry skin. It works for as long as you use it — stopping returns you to where you would otherwise have been, so it is worth deciding up front whether that is a commitment you want.

Right after you brush your teeth at night, on a dry scalp.

On a hard day: A smaller amount along the part line only.

When you might notice

Four to six months. Shedding often increases for the first six weeks — that is old hairs releasing so new ones can come through, and it is the point most women stop.

Roughly what it costs

about $25 a month

What this is based on

Topical minoxidil is the most studied option for female pattern hair loss and the only one available without a prescription with regulatory approval behind it.
